Coco Chanel was born in 1883 and began her fashion career in 1909. Chanel opened a shop under the name of ?Chanel Modes' and began selling her famous hats. In 1913, Chanel introduced a line of active wear for the women who were then working in the factories due to WW1. Her fashion continued to show up around France and became even more popular in 1915. In 1921, Chanel launched her first perfume, Chanel No5. The name of the perfume came from a trip Coco took to a fortune teller. The teller told Coco her lucky number was 5 and the name was born. Chanel No5 was immediately popular with high society women and was released on the fifth day of the fifth month of that year. Chanel needed financial assistance to capitalize on the success of Chanel No5 and sought the help of Pierre Wertheimer. In 1924 ?La Societe des Parfums Chanel' was launched to produce and sell perfumes and beauty products. Several other perfumes were launched over the next seven years including, Chanel No22 and Gardenia.
Chanel retired shortly after this and nothing was launched for almost 20 years. Chanel No19 was later launched on Chanel's 87th birthday, August 19, 1970. Sadly a few months later, Coco Chanel passed away. Karl Lagerfeld was later on appointed as artistic director and hired the new ?nose' of Chanel, Jacques Polge. Chanel has always been known for making signature fragrances and so with the help of Lagerfeld and Polge, it launched Coco in honor of the late Coco Chanel in 1984.
In the years following, the design house of Chanel has launched many popular fragrances including Egoiste and Allure for men and women.
